Protecting God's Children
Protecting God's Children (PGC) is a prevention and awareness training program required by the Archdiocese for all adults at the parish level. PGC was developed by the National Catholic Risk Retention Group, along with other VIRTUS training programs. One-time attendance at a PGC training session is required for all clergy, staff, catechists, and liturgical ministers serving at St. Ignatius but anyone is invited to attend. The parish offers a session each fall, or you can find sessions offered throughout the Archdiocese here.
PGC is conducted by VIRTUS-certified facilitators on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The training makes participants aware of the signs of abuse, the methods and means by which offenders commit abuse, and five easy steps one can use to prevent child abuse. Two videos are the centerpiece of the training: A Time to Protect God's Children and A Plan to Protect God's Children. The facilitators incorporate policies and procedures into the training defining child abuse, addressing the reporting of child abuse, the screening and selection of employees and volunteers, and victim advocacy.
CORI Screening
The Archdiocese of Boston requires that all clergy, including those not serving in a parish, and all parish staff (full and part-time), together with all volunteers (18 years of age and older) who minister to or have the potential for unmonitored access to children, youth, elderly or the disabled, undergo an annual CORI check. A “CORI check” is an individual’s submission of his/her completed CORI Request Form to the Parish Coordinator in accordance with this Policy. Examples of those ministries which must undergo a CORI check, include, but are not limited to: Ministries to the Dying, Music Ministry, Religious Education, and Youth Ministry.

A member of the parish staff coordinates the CORI Request Process for all staff and volunteers each year to ensure that all individuals fill out the annual form.
Protection, Prevention, & Healing
The Archdiocese maintains a website for Protecting Children, where they outline the Child Protection Policy required of all parishes, the Volunteer Code of Conduct, and the processes of reporting abuse in the diocese.
